Many of Sinkler Miller Medical Association’s scholarship recipients choose to practice in the San Francisco Bay Area and become members of the organization. One such past recipient is Dr. Delene A. Richburg who is an attending neonatologist at California Pacific Medical Center.

During my last few years as a Stanford medical student, I was selected to receive a Sinkler Miller Scholarship. It was a great honor. I fondly remember attending the banquet with my parents and being in awe of the dynamic community of African American physicians in the Bay Area. The funds I received help me comfortably approach my clinical years without financial stress. I embraced opportunities to travel for rotations as far way as Guatemala to just up the road at Children’s Hospital Oakland to inform my career choice.

Ultimately, I went on to complete residency in pediatrics at Emory University and fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of California-San Diego. Currently, I am an attending neonatologist at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, where I am the director of our neonatal simulation training program, EHR champion, and tackle an ever expanding list of other administrative duties. Outside of work, my life is devoted to my family. Together with my loving husband Kwalin Kimaathi and my beautiful and precocious daughter Niambi we call Oakland, CA home.

Delene A. Richburg, MD.
